Farm Bird List from April to August 2012

This is a list of the birds that we have seen at the farm during several visits from April to August 2012. For the birds that were seen more than one time, we put the highest number seen at any one time. Our first time to visit the farm was on 14 April. We were not able to visit the farm for most of May as we were out of the country. Some of the birds were only seen by the husband. I have some catching up to do!

1. Grey Heron Ardea cinerea 1
2. Purple Heron Ardea purpurea 1
3. Cinnamon Bittern Ixobrychus cinnamomeus 1 – it looks like one bird lives in the field across us, the place we call “FA”
4. Philippine Duck Anas luzonica 9 – we usually see them do flybys, but the husband also saw them on a puddle of water
5. Brahminy Kite Haliastur indus 1 – always exciting to see a raptor, even if its a common one
6. Raptor sp. Accipitridae/ Falconidae sp. 1 – some kind of buzzard
7. Barred Buttonquail Turnix suscitator 1 – I would love to see more quails!
8. Buff-banded Rail Gallirallus philippensis 1
9. Barred Rail Gallirallus torquatus 2 – felt sad when I saw a kid on a bicycle holding a dead one. 😦
10. Ruddy-breasted Crake Porzana fusca 1 – this was an unusual find!
11. Plain Bush-hen Amaurornis olivacea 1 – I haven’t seen this yet
12. White-breasted Waterhen (White-breasted Bush-hen) Amaurornis phoenicurus 2
13. Oriental Pratincole Glareola maldivarum 3
14. Pink-necked Green-Pigeon Treron vernans 3 – we were surprised to see these at the farm!
15. Red Turtle-Dove (Red Collared-Dove) Streptopelia tranquebarica 2
16. Spotted Dove (Spotted-necked Dove) Streptopelia chinensis 1
17. Zebra Dove Geopelia striata 6 – – usually see them on the road going to the farm but also sees them in the grass in the farm
18. Common Emerald Dove (Emerald Dove) Chalcophaps indica 2 – flies fast and low, almost like it’s buzzing us
19. Red-crested Malkoha (Rough-crested Malkoha) Dasylophus superciliosus 1 – I haven’t seen this yet

22. Indigo-banded Kingfisher Alcedo cyanopectus 1f – I haven’t seen this yet

25. Blue-tailed Bee-eater Merops philippinus 6

27. Philippine Pygmy Woodpecker (Philippine Woodpecker) Dendrocopos maculatus 1
28. Hooded Pitta Pitta sordida 2 1 nest – really excited to have this bird in the farm!

37. Golden-bellied Flyeater (Golden-bellied Gerygone) Gerygone sulphurea 2
38. Tawny Grassbird Megalurus timoriensis 1 – I haven’t seen this yet
39. Striated Grassbird Megalurus palustris 12
40. Grey-backed Tailorbird Orthotomus derbianus 3
41. Bright-capped Cisticola (Golden-headed Cisticola) Cisticola exilis 2
42. Mangrove Blue Flycatcher Cyornis rufigastra 2 – very nice song
43. Black-naped Monarch Hypothymis azurea 6 – haven’t seen them lately …
44. Richard’s Pipit (Paddyfield Pipit or Oriental Pipit) Anthus richardi 12
45. White-breasted Wood-swallow Artamus leucorynchus 12 – The most visible and audible bird in the farm.

48. Olive-backed Sunbird Cinnyris jugularis 2

51. Scaly-breasted Munia Lonchura punctulata 15 – fun to watch them flying in flocks around the grass
52. Chestnut Munia (Black-headed Munia) Lonchura malacca 8
